Terpenes are organic compounds found within nature that are largely responsible for the scent, taste, and even effects of various natural organisms. The most abundant sources of terpenes are found within plants. For example, the fresh scent of pine found in trees and many common cooking ingredients such as basil, rosemary, and parsley are due to the terpene Pinene. The common scent of lemons are from the terpene Limonene. Even the calming scent of lavender is due to the terpene Linalool.

There are thousands among thousands of terpenes found in nature with many still being discovered. The commonly sought after benefits of essential oils are driven by the terpenes within the essential oils. On top of that, cannabis is known to contain approximately 200 different terpenes and the terpene content is largely constitutes the variations in scent, taste, and effects of different strains. The ability of the cannabis plant to have varying effects from relaxation to improved mood are due to the amount of terpenes within the plant. Although only recently beginning to be studied in depth, terpenes in cannabis are thought to have numerous health benefits such as anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-anxiety, and much more.

Most terpenes, and all terpenes used in our products, are on the FDA’s GRAS (Generally Recognized As Safe) list. Being on this list means a material is safe for consumption without concern for safety. However, it is important to note that as with all other materials that are in their purest forms, and therefore extremely potent, our terpenes should be handled with the utmost care and not consumed directly without diluting prior. When something is this concentrated, a little really does go a long way!

Terpenes can be used in a variety of ways. Most commonly, terpenes are added back to products to give the natural taste and effects that were lost in the manufacturing, extraction, and distillation processes. They can be added to products such as oils, beverages, foods, baked goods, confectionery goods, and more.

Terpenes are extremely potent in their natural form and must be diluted prior to use. DO NOT ingest terpenes without diluting them prior. Often times, terpene products will contain other solvents and diluents to reduce the purity, but Tierra Terpenes products use ONLY 100% Pure Terpenes and are therefore extremely concentrated.

A recommended starting point for use it about 1-5% per volume of product. For example, when added to 1 gram of product, it is recommended to start with about 1-2 drops. You can always test this amount and add more later, but you can’t remove it if you have added too much so start low and increase only if needed.
